2016 Halloween Asteroid Has Its Own Moon
Scientists captured radar data of asteroid 2003 YT1 as it passed Earth on Oct. 31, 2016 at a distance of 3.3 million miles (5.3 million km). The asteroid has its own tiny moon.
The asteroid 2003 YT1 measures approximately 3,600 feet (1,100 meters) in diameter. Its small moon measures about 500 feet (150 meters) across. The maximum separation between the primary asteroid and its moon is about 2.5 miles (4 kilometers).
